Pitch Preparation, Mentor and Mentee Lunch

Today’s class led by Lena Wong, focused on the art of elevator pitch techniques. How can you effectively convey your work in just a few sentences within mere seconds while also leaving a long-lasting impression?  For someone like me, accustomed to visual expression, succinctly introducing my business with precise language and addressing the listener’s pain points in such a short time is quite challenging. After today’s class, I reflected on how my business can survive in a world where attention spans are only a few seconds long. It might be having a unique and memorable business name, it might also involve crafting a catchy slogan to attract my target audience or highlighting what makes my product stand out from similar ones.

In the second part of the class, Robin shared his practical experiences, was incredibly inspiring. His extensive business background offered us invaluable insights into the complexities and challenges of entrepreneurship. Robin’s unique observational skills and his knack for spotting opportunities everywhere were particularly enlightening. He emphasized the importance of courage in taking risks if we wish to pursue our goals.  For example, he recounted the story of an entrepreneur who used expired bread to brew beer, which surprisingly led numerous bakeries to contribute their surplus. Moreover, our existing expertise and skills can be integrated into our entrepreneurial endeavors, allowing us to leverage our strengths and create unique products. During the subsequent group discussions, I particularly appreciated the mutual support and feedback among classmates. Having such wonderful peers by our side provides us with greater strength on our somewhat solitary journey as entrepreneurial mothers.

The highlight of the day was lunch with our mentors. My mentor, Loretta, shared her entrepreneurial journey and the challenges she encountered along the way. In our discussions, we discovered a shared dissatisfaction with the mundanity of conventional work life and a collective desire to forge our own paths. Her experiences were a great source of encouragement, and I eagerly anticipate following in her footsteps as I embark on my own entrepreneurial journey.
