As a Hong Kong working mother, my days unfold as one continuous negotiation—from bedtime battles to client pricing, each moment demands wisdom and grace. It began with two unexpected workshops that changed how I communicate with my children, colleagues, and myself.
I once saw negotiation as purely transactional until instructor Hoi Lai reframed it: “True negotiation builds stronger relationships while seeking agreement.” This insight transformed my approach to parenting. Instead of insisting my daughter sleep by 9 PM, I learned to ask: “What matters here? Her rest, or our morning peace?” This distinction between positions and underlying interests became my new lens.
Understanding BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) gave me confidence. When I sat beside her bed and offered, “Let’s read for five minutes first,” her delighted nod revealed the power of mutual understanding. No conflict—just connection.
Kendy’s photography workshop opened my eyes to visual dialogue. “Before capturing an image,” she advised, “ask what story you want to tell and who you’re telling it to.” Like negotiation, clarity of purpose shapes the outcome.
The rule of thirds, thoughtful lighting, and intentional angles became tools to direct attention and evoke feeling—just as tone and timing do in conversation. With accessible editing tools, I now fine-tune images until they speak the truth I wish to share.
Our post-workshop lunch brought mentors and participants together, turning lessons into lived wisdom. Over simple food, we exchanged stories and encouragement, bridging the gap between theory and daily practice. Learning, I saw, continues in the community.
These workshops taught me that negotiation and photography both center on understanding and expression. We need not be experts—only attentive. By listening beneath words and seeing beyond the frame, we uncover deeper needs and meanings.
As a mother and professional, I now balance firmness with curiosity, capturing moments while honoring their depth. This is the gentle strength of navigating life: finding harmony and identity through every thoughtful exchange.
