From Our Fellow: Refining Entrepreneurial Skills- Insights on Finance & Time Management

Arriving at the fifth session of the program, I was grateful for the singing bowl experience arranged by Mom4Mom. It provided a moment of resonance and healing for all the mothers, offering a precious space to soothe ourselves amidst our personal circumstances, high-pressure routines, and recent incidents. Following this grounding start, we delved into learning two essential skills every entrepreneur must master: financial and time management.

As a full-time mother, I consider myself the family’s “CFO” and “time management master.” However, to become a successful entrepreneur, foundational competencies like managing accounts and planning workflows cannot be entirely outsourced. Building this knowledge is necessary.

Thank you to Lena Wong for explaining financial concepts so clearly. She helped us understand the basics of income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow, and highlighted the importance of budgeting, financing, and tax knowledge. After all, running a business ultimately comes down to the ability to balance revenue and costs.

The other key focus was time management—a topic of great interest to me and many fellow participants.

Thank you to Natalie Lee for generously sharing her experience. I truly admire how she leverages resources and networks to manage multiple ventures while nurturing her family life. Her sharing significantly boosted my confidence in the entrepreneurial journey.

During the session, Natalie pinpointed a common frustration among mothers: why do we feel constantly busy yet perpetually short on time? She clarified that the key lies not in “managing time,” but in “managing tasks.” Thank you for the tailored task list she designed, which helps us categorize to-dos by goal—such as family, business, health, and emotional well-being—and distinguish between what must be done today and what can be scheduled later. This simple tool also reminded me to reserve time for my own rest.

I hope every fellow, like me, can use this session as a chance to re-examine their pace. What we mothers are building extends beyond our children and families; it is equally vital to carve out time for ourselves—whether to pause, exercise, or simply nurture our mental and physical health. May we move forward not with blind haste, but with thoughtful planning and greater self-care, walking a steadier and more sustainable path.
