From Our Fellow- Law, a Mother’s Gentle Armour

To many mothers, the law often seems like a distant and complex world of legal jargon. But today, at a workshop hosted by Withers, I experienced firsthand that when legal knowledge is in hand, it becomes a mother’s most gentle and steadfast armour.

This course, designed especially for mothers, rests on two pillars: “Company Law” that safeguards dreams, and “Family Law” that builds a rational line of defense for the home.

During the startup company law session, Senior Associate Mr. Howard Wong clearly debunked the myth that “a one-man band can handle everything.” He emphasized that “legal compliance is the most crucial element for any business.” From shareholding structure design and fundraising channels to intellectual property and company secretarial matters, these professional aspects are like invisible companions on the entrepreneurial journey, enabling mother-entrepreneurs to walk more steadily and go further. It dawned on me that true entrepreneurial strength lies not in doing everything oneself, but in knowing when to seek professional support, allowing a reliable system to safeguard one’s dreams.

Later, the sharing by Anisha Ramanathan, Joined Partner from Withers’ Divorce and Family team, touched a softer corner of my heart. We discussed practical issues such as marital property and child custody, but Anisha’s perspective went beyond the legal text. She made me understand that marriage is a covenant that requires wisdom and love to uphold together. Understanding family law is not about anticipating the end of a relationship, but about building a rational safety net for each other with conscious love and responsibility—this very “preparedness” is the greatest form of cherishing the relationship.

After the class, I felt a newfound strength within me. This workshop taught me that its purpose was not to make oneself sharp or guarded, but to empower one to love, give, and venture forth more fearlessly. When a mother decides to open her eyes and understand the rules by which the world operates, she becomes not just the guardian of her family, but the captain of her own life. And this “knowing”—is the greatest strength of all.
